Periodontics

Gum disease often starts quietly — a little bleeding when you brush, gums that look a bit puffy. Catching it early with the right treatment keeps a small issue from turning into a bigger one that threatens the teeth themselves.

Open Mon–Fri · 9AM–1PM & 2–6PM

What it is

Gum (periodontal) disease starts when plaque and bacteria build up along and beneath the gumline, causing inflammation. In its early stage (gingivitis), it's usually reversible with a thorough cleaning and better home care. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection affects the bone and tissue holding your teeth in place. Treatment ranges from a deeper cleaning to more involved periodontal therapy, depending on how advanced it is.

What to expect

  • 1
    Evaluation
Dr. Kim checks your gums for signs of inflammation, bleeding, or bone loss, often measuring gum pockets to gauge severity.
  • 2
    Deep cleaning if needed
Scaling and root planing removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the tooth root to help gums reattach.
  • 3
    Follow-up care
Depending on severity, you may need a follow-up visit to check healing and gum health.
